What is your view about the
internet? You see, the internet palaver has been a controversy for many people
including myself. I do not know about you but I believe strongly that surely
the internet has caused many tongues wagging. I was trying to analyze this
issue one day and along I became totally confused because the issue of internet
being a threat or treasure is twofold. But come to think of it, virtually
everything humans made has one time or the other became a threat and a
treasure at the same time. Even what God himself fashioned! Stop starring at me that way. Of course yes. God
himself also confirmed it. Somewhere in the book of Genesis in the account of
creation after God created mankind the holy book said [not me] that 'God regretted
creating man'.
The
invention of the ‘bank of information that never goes bankrupt’ called the internet
changed the modus operandi humans used to execute their duties. One of those
changes can be seen in banks, oil companies, Examination bodies, and many
conglomerates. It helped man save one of the most treasured assets called
time. Previously before the invention of the internet man was not able to achieve much within a short space of time. Time was literally underutilized . But with the emergence of the internet,
the whole story is changed . Now some processes that would have taken hours now
take only minutes. For example sending a fax message containing your bio data to a company where you desire to
work.
Another
way the internet has changed the economy and became a plus in Nation building
is the part of ‘Information Sourcing’. I have never seen an encyclopedia as
large and rich like the internet. You can get as much as any information you
desire to get. As old and out dated information is been discarded, new and fresh one is been suplemented. You can now school on line, read up news reports around the
globe just by having a connection to the internet. The internet has help many
people, companies improve in the varsity of ideas and information.
I can bet
with you the internet is bigger than you ever imagined it to be. I remember
vividly of a certain day when I was delegated to participate in a debate, due
to my inexperience in that act [I do not like debate right from my school days,
but now I have no option than to face it because I will be building a career
around it soonest which they call public speaking] I had to quickly resort to
the internet to brush up my skills. Despite the fact I did not later
participate in that debate I must say that it was an eye-opener for me. I
cannot tell you all that I learnt that day but it was really educating.
Furthermore,
the internet has also help in the field of communications and relationships
more especially in relationship. The invention of powerful social networks like
face book, twitter, Skype, digg, black planet has gone a long way in bridging
gaps , uniting friends and relationships that have been apart for a very long
time. In fact people are now having their dates, engagements and even getting
married via social networking. Face book is one of the social networks I
cherish very much. It helped me made new friends and reconnect with old ones. The internet has also helped many people in the part
of business and networking. The internet has allowed many businesses survive
while others boomed and flourished. People no longer have to have their neck
bent on buying books, audios, gadgets and many others by making their
transactions in the supermarkets, they now go online. Haven’t you heard of
Online Shopping? That is one of the merits of the Internet. On the issue of
networking people not connect people, friend with friends, businessmen with
businessmen and just like that. The merits of the internet are numerous and
fascinating.
But why are pointing fingers at the
internet after all that we have read above. The truth remain that just as the
internet serves us good it also serves us bad. Pornography is no on the high.
Fraudsters have also created a niche for themselves under the canopy of the internet.
But the prevalent of them all is Pornographic viewing. Even as I write to you
there is a young man who does not know what else to spend his time on, viewing
pornographic pictures near me at the café now. Like I said earlier in this
little piece, there is virtually nothing created that do not have its merits
and demerits, its good and bad side. But the truth remains that only we can decide
where we want to benefit from. And how we want to channel our directions to. We alone can control ourselves and nobody will
do that for you and me. Someone once noted in pain, he said ‘The internet will
lead many youths to hell’ believe me it is true. Lest I forget the internet has
a kind of addictive power. I have fallen prey of this trap before. The more you
use the internet the more you will want to use it and that will cause you, your
money and precious time so be careful how you use the internet. To use the
internet effectively you must have a great dose of self
discipline.
